This month, we want to take the time to recognize our steps to create a diverse and inclusive company that helps change the narrative surrounding the construction industry.
Women-owned businesses are steadily growing. At ECS, we celebrate and champion women-owned businesses. The stereotype surrounding the construction industry is that it is a boy’s club. While it is true that men outnumber women in the construction field, we are seeing a shift of more women joining construction-based careers and excelling. We are also seeing women opening successful construction companies all over the country.
In Utah, it takes more than just being started by a woman to be considered a woman-owned business (WOB). Utah’s Small Business Administration outlines the requirements to be considered a WOB. These requirements include:
- Being at least 51% owned and controlled by a woman who is a U.S. Citizen.
- Being managed by a woman on a day-to-day basis.
- A woman must be the one making long-term decisions for the company.
- The highest officer position in the company must be held by a woman on a full-time basis during normal working hours.
Throughout history, women have done incredible things and broken glass ceilings in all sorts of industries. As more women’s voices are brought to the forefront of our industry, we will see the greater advancements and innovations that come from having a diverse perspective.
